Domaine Arnaud et Sophie
Sophie Noellat and Arnaud Sirugue represent two important branches of what are two famous historic vignerons of Vosne-Romanée, whose companies are one step away from each other: the domaine Michel Noellat and the domaine Robert Sirugue. The company that the two spouses have set up, the Domaine Sirugue-Noellat, which they like to define a ‘small maison run with the philosophy of a domaine’ consists of a small cuverie located under the house of Arnaud’s grandfather, located right in front of Maxime Cheurlin and next to the historic house of Rene Engel on the square in front of the Vosne-Romanee town hall. They began their wine adventure coming out on the market with a difficult first vintage but of excellent quality, the 2016 vintage, with two cuvées: a Bourgogne passe-tout-grains rosé, obtained from Gamay grapes and Pinot Noir, coming from Vosne-Romanée. Now the domaine produces four labels annually – their rosé, a red Vosne Romanée ‘Les Barreaux’, and since 2018 Meursault ‘Les Grands Charrons’ and Gevrey Chambertin ‘En Champs’.
Sophie points out how the company goal is absolutely directed to focus on the quality of the final product and what convinced them to be the first to establish this small company was the confirmation of the superb level of the wines that were produced.. Arnaud, in particular, lingers in the story, with understandable pride of what can be considered their flagship wine – their Vosne Romanée ‘Les Barreaux’, which Arnaud highlights as coming from the noblest area of the famous climat, located near the hill, beaten by the first morning sun, and above all adjacent to the mythical ‘Cros Parantoux’ and ‘PetitsMonts’. The agronomic management is based on a very prudent regime of lutte raisonnée.
The vinification procedure encompasses a period of 3-5 days for cold soaking prior to fermentation, and if the vintage allows it, the company philosophy prefers to introduce up to fifty per cent of whole bunches in the musts for a cuvaison lasting about twenty days in stainless steel tanks, under a controlled temperature. Interventions, in this phase, are reduced – no pumping over is utilised but only occasional, gentle punching down, and elevage is carried out in 30% new small barrels and lasts for 18 months. Finally, there is no pre-bottling filtration or fining carried out so the final wines are full of life and character, and are keenly able to express their individual, respective terroirs.
